World Stroke Day is commemorated annually on October 29th to raise awareness about the symptoms of stroke and strategies to prevent this condition. During a stroke, one may experience numbness, perplexity, speech impairments, dizziness, and severe migraines. As a medical emergency, a stroke necessitates immediate action to minimize harm and enhance the chances of recovery. Stroke can lead to long-lasting effects on the body, such as muscle weakness, paralysis, rigidity, or alterations in sensation, typically on one side of the body. In India, stroke is a significant health issue, ranking fourth in terms of mortality and fifth in terms of disability due to an aging population and lifestyle factors. Stroke occurrences are rising worldwide, and this health condition could be accountable for 10 million deaths by 2050. Stroke takes place when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, causing the brain tissue to lack blood and oxygen. A stroke disrupts the blood flow to the brain, leading to immediate damage to brain cells.
“Prompt treatment is crucial in order to restore blood flow to the brain, involving emergency medications, endovascular procedures, or surgery. Certain strokes can be treated with medications that dissolve blood clots or procedures like thrombectomy, which significantly reduce brain damage. Importantly, the post-stroke period is critical for recovery and rehabilitation. By receiving the right support and implementing the appropriate approach, many stroke survivors can regain independence and improve their quality of life,” explains Dr. Vinay Goyal, Chairman – Neurology (Movement Disorder) at the Institute of Neurosciences, Medanta, Gurugram, in an interview with HT Digital.
Dr. Goyal shares tips on recovery and measures to enhance the standard of living after a stroke.
1. Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle
In the first three months following a stroke, the risk of experiencing a second stroke increases by 15 times. It is essential to be vigilant for signs such as facial drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, vertigo, sudden dizziness, changes in vision, or severe migraines to promptly address a recurrence. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial for stroke recovery and prevention.
Incorporate a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Limit the intake of salt, sugar, and saturated fats to decrease the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Engage in regular exercise as recommended by your healthcare provider to improve cardiovascular health and support recovery. Manage stress through relaxation techniques or mindfulness practices. Additionally, sufficient sleep plays a vital role in recovery as it facilitates the body’s natural healing processes.
2. Medication Management
Stroke survivors often require medications to manage underlying conditions and reduce the risk of future strokes. These may include blood thinners to prevent blood clots, antihypertensive drugs to control high blood pressure, cholesterol-lowering medications, and more. Regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers are necessary to monitor the effectiveness of medications and make any necessary adjustments.
3. Follow a Rehabilitation Plan
Rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in stroke recovery as it offers a personalized program designed to assist survivors in regaining strength, mobility, and independence. Rehabilitation typically involves physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. It aims to retrain the body and mind for everyday activities and effective communication.
