Moeen Ali is of the opinion that England has let themselves down in the World Cup 2023 by not exhibiting the aggressive style of cricket they are renowned for. Led by Jos Buttler, the Three Lions currently find themselves in ninth place in the standings, with two points and a net run rate of -1.248, having managed only one victory out of four matches.

England’s upcoming match against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore is considered a must-win game for the defending champions. After suffering a crushing 229-run defeat to Aiden Markram’s South Africa in their previous match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Buttler’s team will undoubtedly be lacking in confidence.

In their pursuit of chasing down a mammoth target of 400, England faltered and were dismissed for just 170 runs in a mere 22 overs. This loss marked their most significant defeat in the history of the World Cup.

“The thing is, Test cricket differs from one-day cricket. We have been adopting diverse approaches throughout. Since 2015, we have consistently played aggressive cricket and have been rather successful in doing so. In my view, the absence of that approach has proved costly for us in this tournament. I believe we need to revert to that style, but without mindlessly swinging the bat, and become the aggressive side that we are capable of being,” Moeen stated during the pre-match press conference.

Moeen, who has only featured in one match in the ongoing World Cup against New Zealand on October 5, highlighted the significance of England reclaiming their confidence in order to reverse their fortunes.

“Undoubtedly, we are disappointed with the outcome and our performance. However, in this competition, it is imperative to swiftly move forward and regroup. Each match is a do-or-die situation, and although we may not have encountered such a dire situation before, we comprehend that we must restore our self-belief and deliver better performances in batting, bowling, and fielding compared to what we have produced thus far in this tournament,” he further added.
