Bedi is widely regarded as one of the greatest spinners in the history of cricket. He represented India in 67 Tests from 1967 to 1979 and obtained 266 wickets. Additionally, he took seven wickets in 10 One-Day Internationals.
Together with Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, Bedi formed a group of spinners who brought about innovation in Indian cricket during the 1970s. They were famously known as the “spin quartet” and played a key role in India’s triumphs overseas.
One of Bedi’s notable achievements occurred during the 1977-78 Test series in Australia. Despite losing the series 2-3, Bedi’s leadership guided the team to wins in the third and fourth tests. He personally claimed 21 wickets in the series.
Bedi was renowned for his subtle variations in bowling, which often left batsmen perplexed. Additionally, he displayed exceptional fielding skills, making him a valuable asset to the Indian team. Apart from his international career, Bedi had a prominent presence in domestic cricket, representing Delhi in the Ranji Trophy and leading them to titles in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981.
The passing of Bedi is an immense loss to the cricketing world. He was a legendary figure and will be deeply missed by his fans worldwide.
