Vikramaditya Motwane reveals that Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar were considered for AK vs AK; reveals that Akshay nearly ejected him from his office after hearing the script
In the year 2020, theatres were closed due to the Covid pandemic. Thus, digital platforms showcased several films to cater to movie enthusiasts. While some failed to captivate, a few stood out. One such film that falls in the latter category for many viewers is AK vs AK. Featuring Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, it was a meta film where both portrayed exaggerated versions of themselves. The audience appreciated its unconventional storyline and the performances of both Anil and Anurag. Surprisingly, before Anil Kapoor came on board, Aamir Khan and even Akshay Kumar were contenders to play the actor’s role in AK vs AK.

In a comprehensive interview with Mid-Day’s editor Mayank Shekhar, Vikramaditya Motwane, the director of AK vs AK revealed interesting trivia. He mentioned that the writer Avinash Sampath had initially penned the film with Aamir Khan in mind. When Vikramaditya joined the project, he advised dropping the idea since he believed that Aamir would never sign up for such a film.
Later, Vikramaditya Motwane and Avinash Sampath approached Akshay Kumar, who, like Aamir Khan, has the initials AK. Interestingly, Vikramaditya disclosed that Akshay nearly ejected them from his office upon hearing the film’s concept! Vikramaditya stated, “There is Akshay Kumar, whom we did approach, and it was a very intriguing meeting – I mean, he didn’t outrightly say, ‘Get out of my office,’ but it was close enough!”
Eventually, they approached Shahid Kapoor, and reports started circulating that the film would be titled AK vs SK. However, the collaboration didn’t work out, and finally, Anil Kapoor was brought on board. Vikramaditya explained, “For a while, I was making it with Shahid [Kapoor], which kind of happened, and then it didn’t. The [actor] AKs kept changing. The [director] AK, that is Anurag Kashyap, was a constant. He’s an incredible actor.”
He further praised Anurag’s acting prowess, saying, “I think he is fantastic. In fact, everyone on the AK set was talking about Anil Kapoor. I believe Anurag, especially in the final scene, is exceptional. You actually get emotional when something happens to him.”
AK vs AK narrates the story of an actor and filmmaker involved in a public clash. Consequently, the director gets boycotted, and to seek revenge, he kidnaps the actor’s daughter, who is also an actress, and films the actor’s attempts to rescue her. The film was directly released on Netflix on December 24, 2020.
