Authorities report that a man suspected of fatally shooting 18 individuals and injuring 13 others in Maine has been discovered deceased.

Robert Card, who was wanted in connection with the shootings at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston, is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a law enforcement official informs The Associated Press.

The official was not authorized to publicly discuss specifics of the investigation and spoke to The AP anonymously. A news conference scheduled for 10 p.m. by the police.

Card, 40, of Bowdoin, Maine, was a U.S. Army reservist who underwent a mental health evaluation in mid-July after displaying erratic behavior during training, a U.S. official told The Associated Press.

Card had been sought since the shootings on Wednesday night, and warrants for his arrest on charges of murder were issued.

A bulletin circulated to law enforcement nationwide shortly after the attack stated that Card had been admitted to a mental health facility for a two-week period during the past summer after “experiencing auditory hallucinations and making threats to carry out” an attack on a military base.

A U.S. official mentioned that Card was in training with the Army Reserve’s 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment in West Point, New York, when his superiors became concerned about his behavior.

State police transported Card to the Keller Army Community Hospital at West Point for evaluation, according to the official, who was not authorized to divulge this information and spoke to The Associated Press anonymously.
